What we’ve been up to: advanced accreditation in LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®

Congratulations to Broom & Moon co-founder Clare Lynch for becoming a LEGO® Serious Play® System Level Certified Facilitator.

This latest certification means Clare is trained to facilitate Build Level 3, an advanced application of the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method designed for systems thinking.

In the words of Donella Meadows, author of Thinking in Systems, systems thinking is “a way of thinking that gives us the freedom to identify root causes of problems and see new opportunities.”

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Build Level 3 is perfect for small groups of senior executives grappling with a complex strategic problem.

In Build Level 3 workshops, participants first build a model of a shared vision. Next, they build models of the factors that could affect — or be affected by — that vision. Finally, they connect those factors to the vision and to each other. Some connections will be strong, others weak. Some connections will be two-way, others one-way.

This process allows participants to see the relationships between all the elements in their model of their shared vision. That means they can stress-test their strategy for realising the vision by playing out different scenarios. These scenarios might typically be based on a conversation, held before the session, between the facilitator and the group’s CEO — one that answers the question, “what keeps you up at night?”

Gathered around the model, participants can then see the impact of any given scenario by physically moving parts of it. As in: “If I jiggle this element what happens elsewhere in the model because of the connections we’ve made? Is the model of our vision resilient? Or do parts of it collapse entirely? And what can we do to prepare for such eventualities?” From there, the participants can agree on a set of guiding principles for protecting and promoting their vision.

At Broom & Moon, we work with leaders to translate their strategy into a story people can get behind. We’re excited about the potential of LEGO® Serious Play® to help leaders in that process.
