A free LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® workshop for your team?
Can building stuff with LEGO® really promote culture change in your org? Or unite your whole team around the same vision or purpose?
As newly certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitators, our answer is a whole-hearted “yes”! Before completing our training, at least one of us was sceptical about the role of LEGO® in the grown-up world of work. But one of us had witnessed at first hand the impact of the method on a group of senior leaders. So we decided to explore if we could use LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to help our own clients — and we’re so glad we did.
Our work is all about helping teams uncover things like who they are, who they serve, why they exist and what direction they want to take. It’s a process we call Finding the Gold, and LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® has given us an additional — and creative — way to do that.
What is LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®?
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a way to get people sharing ideas, solving problems and thinking creatively. The world’s biggest brands — from tech giants to global banks — have all used LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to boost performance.
During a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® workshop, the facilitator encourages participants to express their ideas by building LEGO® models — our trainer described it as being like a 3D printer for the mind. The group is then invited to spend time reflecting on the models they and their colleagues have just seen, heard and handled.
What’s so great about LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®?
During our training, we got hands-on experience of the benefits of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® — both for ourselves and the invited guests who generously offered to be guinea pigs for our new facilitation skills. In the final workshop we ran for those guests, we saw the transformative power of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®. In the space of just two hours, people opened up, became more confident and creative, and demonstrated an ability to communicate much more effectively.
That’s because LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®:
- Makes ideas more memorable by engaging people’s eyes, ears and hands in the learning process
- Gives a voice to everyone — not just the most senior or most extrovert member of the group
- Keeps everyone much more engaged and energised than in a traditional meeting
- Encourages deeper thinking (building the models is quick, reflecting on them takes much longer)
